Why is Beef Striploin Steak the Best Choice?
The Beef Striploin Steak cut is known for its rich flavor, tenderness and has become a favorite choice among steak enthusiasts.
The rich marbling in this steak cut contributes to both flavor and juiciness, ensuring a balance of fat that enhances its overall taste and texture that is difficult to match with other cuts.
The Striploin Beef Steak emerges as a versatile option that can be used in various cooking methods, when comparing to other popular choices, such as tenderloin or ribeye. While tenderloin is exceptionally tender, it often lacks the intense flavor that striploin delivers. On the other hand, ribeye is known for its marbling and taste, but it can be overly fatty for some preferences.
Therefore, the striploin provides a perfect middle ground and offers a delightful balance of tenderness and flavor without being too greasy.
This feature makes Beef Striploin Steak particularly suitable for numerous cooking techniques like grilling, pan-searing or even baking by retaining the original flavor and texture.
Ingredients we Need for Beef Striploin Steak and Mashed Potatoes
Like any other dish, the ingredients we choose play the most important role in enhancing the overall flavor and texture of this Beef Striploin Steak. Starting from the choice of high-quality beef cuts like sirloin, striploin, or ribeye to all other ingredients used in the marinades, each and every one of them impact the flavor, texture and also help tenderize the meat.
If you want your Beef Steak to be flavorful, tender and juicy, it is essential to chose the best-quality ingredients. Exact measurement and quantity of all the ingredients can be found in the recipe card down below, so if you want skip these details you can simply jump to the recipe card down below.
The Beef Cut:
The main ingredient of Beef Striploin Steak is the beef cut; the star of the dish. There are many options of beef cuts are available to choose from including sirloin, ribeye or striploin (the one I am using). Beef Striploin is a beef cut from the short loin section of the cow that is particularly known for its tenderness and rich flavor. For the Beef Striploin Steak, select a cut that is well-marbled, typically weighing around 1 to 1.5 pounds.
Garlic:
Garlic is used to add rich flavor to complement the beef. It is recommended to use freshly minced garlic but you can also use garlic power as well. A teaspoon of minced garlic is used directly in the marinade. I am also using whole garlic that will be pan-seared along with the steak in skillet. Minced ginger can also be used to be added in the marinade, but this is optional.
Butter:
Butter is used to cook the beef steak that adds a robust flavor. It is used for basting during the cooking of beef steak. It is added to the heated skillet in which we basically pan-sear our Striploin Beef Steak. Continuous spooning of melted butter over steak, which is called basting, helps infuse the flavor and moisture in the steak. Butter is also used in mashed potatoes.
Salt and Black Pepper:
Salt adds to the natural flavors of beef while freshly crushed black pepper provides heat and spice to the dish. Use coarse sea salt or kosher salt for seasoning. I add salt and pepper in the marinade so that both the ingredients infuse completely in the steak. Salt and pepper is also used to season mashed potatoes.
Potatoes:
For the mashed potatoes, choose starchy varieties like Russets or Yukon Gold potatoes, typically around 1 pounds. This selection creates a creamy and fluffy texture, ideal for pairing with the beef steak. Milk is also added in mashed potatoes to add creamy texture and rich flavor.
BBQ Sauce:
I am using BBQ Sauce to be brushed over cooked steak and mashed potatoes to add my personal favorite touch of flavor but you can skip this if you want.
Soya Sauce and Vinegar:
These ingredients are also optional but I use a teaspoon of each to add in the blend of slight tangy and umami flavor in the Beef Striploin Steak.
For an optional garnish, finely chopped chives or parsley can provide a fresh and vibrant touch to the dish, visually enhancing your beef striploin steak with mashed potatoes.
How to Cook Beef Striploin Steak?
Preparing the perfect Beef Striploin Steak involves several key steps that ensure a delicious and satisfying meal.
Preparation:
- Select a high quality Beef Striploin Steak Cut that is less than an inch thick.
- Allow the steak to come to room temperature for approximately 30 minutes before cooking, as this ensures even cooking throughout. Once the steak is at room temperature, pat it dry with paper towels to promote a good sear.
Prepare the Marinade:
- In a large bowl add steak, a teaspoon of minced garlic, salt, black pepper to taste, a teaspoon of vinegar and soya sauce each.
- Mix all the ingredients and rub on both the sides of steak so that all the ingredients are blended and infused well in the steak.
- This marinade enhances the natural flavors of the beef steak and prepares it for cooking.
Heat the Skillet:
- Use a heavy skillet, preferably cast iron, and heat it over medium-high heat for about 6 to 8 minutes.
- Skillet should be very hot as it should be smoking slightly that indicates it is ready for searing.
- Add enough amount of butter to the skillet and coat the bottom of the skillet.
Pan-Sear the Seasoned Steak:
- Now place the marinated steak into the hot skillet carefully, laying it away from you to prevent splatter. Do not move the steak for about 5 to 6 minutes to help form nice crust.
- Cut the head of a whole garlic and add in the skillet on the side of steak, this will significantly enhance the flavor of steak. The essence and aroma of garlic create delicious base for basting the steak.
- After 4-5 minutes, flip the steak using tongs. You should see a beautiful brown crust on the first side.
- Add a little more butter and let it melt completely. You can also add fresh herbs at this point. As the butter melts, tilt the pan slightly and use a spoon to baste the melted butter over the top of the steak. This adds flavor and moisture.
- Cook the steak until desired doneness. For medium-rare, cook for about 4 to 5 minutes after flipping (total cooking time should be around 10 to 12 minutes). You can use a meat thermometer to check for doneness; medium-rare is about 135°F (57°C), while medium is around 145°F (63°C). I like my steak to be well-done with no hint of pink inside my steak, so I cook it for additional 8 to 10 minutes (total cooking time should be around 15 to 20 minutes). Again you can check internal temperature with the help of meat thermometer, which should be at least 160°F (71°C).
How to Cook Mashed Potatoes:
Creating creamy mashed potatoes is essential for complementing a flavorful beef striploin steak. When the steak is still cooking, meanwhile you can start making mashed potatoes.
- Begin by peeling the potatoes and cutting them into even chunks or wedges to ensure uniform cooking. Rinse the cut potatoes under cold water to remove excess starch, which can contribute to gumminess.
- Place the potato chunks in a pot of cold, salted water, bring the water to a gentle boil and cook until the potatoes are tender, which usually takes about 15-20 minutes. You can also steam the potatoes, for that use a steamer basket and steam the potatoes for approximately the same length of time.
- Once cooked, drain the potatoes well and return them to the pot to eliminate excess moisture. Now mash the boiled or steamed potatoes with the help of a potato masher.
- Next, add butter in a pan. When butter is melted, add mashed potatoes and mix well. For extra creaminess add half a cup of milk and 2 table spoons of cream. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
Serve:
- Once cooked to your liking, remove the steak from the stove, loosely cover it with foil and let it rest for about 5-10 minutes. This allows juices to redistribute within the meat, resulting in a more tender and flavorful bite.
- After resting, you can slice the steak against the grain and serve immediately. Today, I am not slicing the steak rather I am serving the steak as it is. Serve the mashed potatoes warm alongside your perfectly cooked beef striploin steak for a harmonious meal. You can drizzle any remaining pan juices over the sliced steak for extra flavor. For additional twist of flavor, brush BBQ Sauce over steak and mashed potatoes.
- Enjoy your delicious Beef Striploin Steak with Mashed Potatoes.

Storing and Reheating Leftover Steak and Mashed Potatoes
Leftover Beef Steak can easily be store and it is essential to do this properly to ensure that the flavors and textures are retained for the next meal. Here are some best practices for storing and reheating beef steak with mashed potatoes.
Refrigerating the Leftover:
For refrigeration, allow the beef striploin steak to cool to room temperature before storing. This reduces condensation, which can lead to unwanted moisture when sealed. Place the leftover steak in an airtight container. Wrap the steak tightly in plastic wrap or aluminum foil to protect it from air exposure, which could lead to dryness.
Mashed potatoes should also be stored in an airtight container to retain their creamy consistency. Both items can be stored in the refrigerator for up to three to four days.
Freezing the Leftover:
If you wish to keep your leftovers for a longer period, freezing is a suitable option. Beef striploin steak freezes well and it is advisable to slice it before freezing to facilitate quicker thawing. Wrap each piece individually in plastic wrap, followed by aluminum foil to prevent freezer burn. Stored correctly, they can last in the freezer for up to three months.
I do not recommend freezing the mashed potatoes as they can become watery upon defrosting. But they can be frozen as well and to do so it is best to slightly undercook them and avoid adding too much cream or butter.
Reheating the Leftover:
When it comes time to reheat your beef striploin steak with mashed potatoes, several methods can preserve the quality.
For the steak, the best option is to gently reheat it in an oven set to a low temperature, around 250°F (121°C), until warmed through. This method prevents overcooking and maintains its juicy texture.
For mashed potatoes, consider reheating them on the stovetop with a splash of milk to restore their creaminess. Cover and heat on low, stirring occasionally.
